Making Printed T-Shirts at Home

by Kate Web

Your clothes are an expression of who you are. They are the most visible aspect of your appearance, and as such it is really unsurprising that people are always looking into ways of making their clothing more expressive and individual. One cheap and popular means is making your own printed t-shirts. This is actually something that can easily be done at home, provided you have a printer, an iron and some time to be creative.

To make a printed t-shirt you're going to need these things:
  • A plain t-shirt
  • An iron
  • A PC and printer
  • Transfer paper
  • Scissors
  • Something to transfer
First find something you'd particularly like to see transferred onto the t-shirt in question. This can of course be anything, whether it's a piece of artwork you particularly like, a phrase you find inspiring or even just something you pulled from pressing I'm Feeling Lucky on Google. Then print it off on an ordinary printer. There's no need to use special paper in it, or a special sort of ink. You just need to make sure that it's bold and clear. Then you just cut the border's of the picture down until the paper is the size you want to appear on the printed t-shirt proper.

Your t-shirt meanwhile needs to be ironed relatively flat and also well cleaned. You do not want any creases or dirt fragments breaking up the actual picture. If there are creases, air bubbles may be trapped beneath the picture and ruin the actual transfer. Buying one fresh is always a good way to guarantee an acceptable level of cleanliness.

Prepare your t-shirt by laying it flat against the surface, leaving plenty of room for the picture. Lay it face down against the t-shirt, and then cover it with the transfer paper. With that, you're printed to make your printed t-shirt.

Simply take the iron and press it gently against the transfer paper, making sure you pass it over all the sections of the paper. Each section should be under the iron for a good two or three seconds. Be careful not to iron too firmly or roughly, or you may end up damaging the t-shirt or the transfer.

Once the picture has been suitably ironed, very carefully peel the transfer paper away from the picture, being careful not to damage the picture.

And voila! You have made your very own printed t-shirt! Show it off to friends, or even get started with your own t-shirt printing business!
